MADLIB "Beat Konducta" (Poster Print)

Hailing from From Oxnard, Los Angeles, CA, the multi-dimensional Madlib, Born Otis Jackson, Jr., has described himself as a “DJ first, producer second, and MC last”. An enthusiastic crate-digger with a deep reverence for jazz and soul, Madlib is one of the most sought-after producers having released over sixty albums under a plethora of pseudonyms under the guise of Quasimoto, Yesterday’s New Quintet,  Beat Konducta, Sound Directions,  and The Loop Digger. For the initiated, Madlib is best known of his collaborations with MF Doom as Madvillian,  Talib Kweli, Freddie Gibbs, and our favourite Jaylib with J Dilla. The duo released their only album together called “Champion Sound,” on which half the songs were produced by Madlib and half by J Dilla; each artist raps, but only on tracks produced by the other. But where J Dilla’s productions have a kind of high finish, Madlib embraces a low-tech style that has always been more appealing to us, especially on “Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6: A Tribute to . . . ,” an epic composed of dense miniatures and a response to the loss of his dear friend. This poster is a tribute to his 2007 release “Beat Konducta Vol. 3-4: Beat Konducta in India” which fuses Bollywood music and dialogue with hip-hop beats to create a deliciously mad score for a movie you definitely want to see.
