The beginning of Inner City came about as a project in 1987, linked with its founder Kevin Saunderson, renowned as one of the originators of the Detroit techno sound and a landmark figure in dance music. Saunderson set out to break from the structures of techno leading to a unique sound based on colourful keyboard chords, snappy drums and crucially, Paris Grey’s soaring vocals. The marriage of Detroit techno’s propulsive, insistent rhythms and pop’s vibrant, melodic uplift proved a winner as the act arrived just at the right time. The door was wide open for dance floor ready anthems – especially in the UK, where a new culture based around free-spirited dance music and warehouse parties was developing rapidly. They released their debut album “Paradise” (named “Big Fun” in the US) in 1989 and found great success in the US and UK where it went platinum with four top-twenty singles including “Big Fun”, “Good Life” “Ain’t Nobody Better,” and our favourite song “Do You Love What You Feel” featured on this piece.
