Sinéad O’Connor and MC Lyte might seem like a pretty unorthodox pairing, with O’Connor hailing from Dublin, and Lyte’s career bred on the the streets of East Flatbush Brooklyn. At first glance their music seems diametrically opposed in sound with Sinéad crafting experimental blends of alt-rock and funk with hints of pop, and MC Lyte as hip-hop as it gets. But these kindred spirits had parallel debuts in 1987 with O’Connor debuting her album “The Lion And The Cobra” and Lyte with her single “I Cram to Understand U (Sam)” at just 16 years old. The two joined forces on the 1988 remix to Sinéad O’Connor’s single “I Want Your Hands (On Me),” and the coupling showed how a little experimentation could be a winning combo. Not only did we witness Sinéad on a hip-hop track but also Lyte on a rock track. Released in May of 1988, just shortly after Mc Lyte’s Debut full length “Late As A Rock” the accompanying video is an ambrosia of sensual images set to an acid house beat that serves as the inspiration of the design of this piece.
